Futureliner

Take equal parts modern art and early jet age technology. Mix them together in pre-World War II America and what do you get? If you were General Motors, you got the Futurliner.

First displayed at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the fleet of 12 Futurliners traveled across the country as part of the GM Parade of Progress. The enormous horizontal doors that covered the sides of the Futurliners lifted to offer display space for the latest technology of the time: television, the microwave oven and the jet engine, to name a few.

Sadly, the Futurliner was to become a victim of the progress it predicted. It was largely forgotten until Peter Pan Bus Lines acquired one found languishing in a state of disrepair in an upstate New York corn field. The company purchased the Futurliner and began to restore the gentle giant at the Coach Builders garage in Springfield, Mass.

Today, the Futurliner is restored to its former glory and it still serves as a rolling display, offering opportunities to see the vision of the future as seen through the eyes of the past.
